The Korea Road Traffic Authority analyzed big data on traffic accidents and selected 316 "drunk driving accident-prone areas" where many drunk driving accidents occurred, announcing the results on the 14th.
The authority designated locations where three or more fatal or serious injury accidents caused by drunk driving occurred within a 100m radius over the past three years as accident-prone areas.
The two areas with the highest number of drunk driving accidents nationwide are △Kyobo Tower Intersection in Nonhyeon-dong, Seoul △near Cheongdam Square in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul, each with seven fatal accidents. Following these are △Dorim Intersection in Namdong-gu, Incheon and △Chungdae Hospital Intersection in Jung-gu, Daejeon, each with four accidents recorded.
According to the authority, there were a total of 15,059 traffic accidents caused by drunk driving last year, resulting in 214 deaths and 24,261 injuries. Drunk driving accidents occur steadily throughout the year, averaging 1,255 cases per month and 41 cases per day.
Park Hae-su, head of the Data Convergence Division at the Korea Road Traffic Authority, stated, "Every month, 18 people die due to drunk driving," and emphasized, "Drunk driving is a criminal act that causes irreversible damage and pain to the driver and the families of the victims. It is necessary to recognize this and make efforts to prevent drunk driving."
