CU "'Iutjip Tongtong-i Yakgwa Cookie' Turns into Dark Beer... Launching on the 16th"
On the 13th, CU announced that it will newly launch the sold-out sensation ‘Iutjip Tongtong-i Yakgwa Cookie’ as a dark beer.
Iutjip Tongtong-i Yakgwa Cookie is a product born from a collaboration with the popular cafe ‘Iutjip Tongtong-i’ in Apgujeong Rodeo, which gained explosive popularity among the MZ generation and caused a nationwide shortage. In fact, the product surpassed a cumulative sales volume of 2.8 million units in about four months after its release.
The ‘Iutjip Tongtong-i Yakgwa-flavored Dark Beer (4,000 KRW, 4.3%)’, to be released on the 16th, features a subtle and sweet yakgwa aroma for a smooth throat feel, and uses special dark malts to offer a harmonious taste of chocolate, caramel, cookie flavors combined with yakgwa and cinnamon scents.
CU collaborated with Amazing Brewing Company, a leading craft beer company in Korea, putting great effort into planning and development.
The reason CU is focusing on developing differentiated beers is that beer sales account for more than half of the total alcoholic beverage sales in convenience stores, making it the most popular type of alcohol. Especially in August, when beer demand explosively increases, the strategy is to lead the peak beer season market with ‘Iutjip Tongtong-i Yakgwa-flavored Dark Beer’.
BGF Retail, which operates CU, established the first-ever dedicated alcoholic beverage team in the industry last year called the Alcohol TFT, and continuously introduces differentiated products unique to CU, such as ‘Sudden Attack Fung Cream Ale,’ famous for its king cap beer, and ‘Daepyo Beer,’ which led the craft beer craze.
Jang Juhyun MD of BGF Retail’s Alcohol TFT said, “This product, reinterpreting yakgwa cookie as a dark beer, is expected to lead the craft beer craze once again this hot summer,” and added, “CU will continue to introduce unique beers tailored to fun and customer preferences in collaboration with excellent domestic breweries.”
