Yeosu City to Host 2023 International Island Forum in Yeosu
17th-18th Sonocam Hosts Over 500 Participants from 5 Countries
Theme: 'Era of Transition, Resilience of Island Ecosystems'
Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) will hold the ‘2023 International Island Forum in Yeosu’ at Sono Calm Yeosu on the 17th and 18th.
Now in its 5th year, this event is held under the theme “The Era of Transition, Resilience of Island Ecosystems” to explore sustainable future directions for island development.
Experts in island and marine ecosystems from five countries around the world (New Zealand, the Netherlands, Fiji, Greece, and Korea) will participate in in-depth discussions, which will be held both online and offline simultaneously.
Starting with the keynote speech “Ocean Acidification in Pacific Island Countries” by Dr. Kim Currie, head of the Marine Acidification Observation Network at New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, the forum will proceed through three sessions: ▲ Changes and crises in island ecosystems ▲ Efforts to restore island ecosystems ▲ Island ecosystems and the future.
In particular, this forum shares the vision of the ‘2026 Yeosu World Island Expo,’ which is based on discovering the importance and value of islands, and is expected to draw attention to the expo and serve as a milestone to support its successful hosting.
Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong of Yeosu said, “This forum will be a valuable time to envision the blueprint of island ecosystems at a time when the value and importance of islands are increasing due to climate change and environmental pollution,” adding, “We will continue to hold the forum annually to enhance the status of Yeosu as an island city brand.”
