Manhole Cover Surges Due to Rainwater Backflow, Piercing City Bus Floor

View original imageAmid heavy rain caused by Typhoon Khanun, a manhole cover in Changwon, Gyeongnam, surged with backflowing rainwater and pierced the floor of a city bus.
According to Changwon City and online communities, at around 8:05 a.m. on the 10th, the underside of city bus number 101, which had stopped while operating near an apartment in Daewon-dong, Uichang-gu, Changwon, was pierced by a manhole cover.
At the time, there were 5 to 6 people including the driver and passengers on the bus, but no one was reported injured as the manhole cover pierced through the central part of the bus.
The bus immediately ceased operation.
Earlier that day, at around 7:10 a.m., the tire of city bus number 301 running near Gyeonghwa Station in Jinhae-gu was torn by a manhole cover.

A city official stated, "It appears that the manhole cover could not withstand the pressure from the heavy rain, was slightly lifted, and then surged upward, causing the accident."
