BHI Launches Full-Scale Demonstration Project for Large-Scale Green Hydrogen Based on Eco-Friendly Energy
BH I will begin full-scale demonstration of a large-scale green hydrogen project. BH I announced on the 8th that it has completed civil engineering and construction permits from the Korea Gas Safety Corporation (KGS) and Ansan City, and will start construction of the 'Ansan Water Electrolysis Green Hydrogen Production' demonstration project.
BH I plans to complete basic civil engineering work this month and begin full-scale equipment installation from mid-September. The goal is to conduct full-scale commissioning, including performance testing, within the year. As BH I is responsible for EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) related to the green hydrogen project, this project will allow the company to secure not only hydrogen production know-how but also construction expertise.
The Ansan Water Electrolysis Green Hydrogen Production demonstration project is the first in Korea to produce green hydrogen using only eco-friendly energy. While most hydrogen produced worldwide is blue hydrogen or gray hydrogen extracted based on fossil fuels such as LNG, green hydrogen emits no carbon dioxide and is regarded as a key to carbon neutrality.
The 1.25MW-class green hydrogen production facility installed in Ansan produces more than 200N㎥ of hydrogen per hour. It applies the alkaline water electrolysis method, which is also economically advantageous. The alkaline water electrolysis method does not require precious metal catalysts and has the advantage of easy scalability.
Through the Ansan demonstration project, BH I plans to produce more than 100kg of green hydrogen daily. The hydrogen will be produced using electricity supplied from wind power generation in the Bangameori area of Siwha, Gyeonggi Province. Since Ansan City has already been selected as a hydrogen pilot city and has infrastructure such as hydrogen vehicle charging stations, the produced green hydrogen can be practically supplied.
A BH I official said, “The green hydrogen project, along with SMR (Small Modular Reactor), is one of BH I’s important future growth engines. Since all certification procedures have been completed and full-scale construction has begun, related projects will proceed rapidly in the future.”

He added, “In particular, since BH I is also responsible for EPC in this project, we will accumulate as much related know-how as possible and participate in green hydrogen facility construction projects not only domestically but also overseas. Through this, we will advance as a comprehensive energy infrastructure specialist company.”
