As a result of a special inspection on the management status of the Greenbelt Area conducted by Gyeonggi Province, about 32.5% of the sites that received permits for construction and other activities were found to have committed illegal acts different from the approved usage.

Gyeonggi Province announced on the 6th that from May 13 to July 6, it conducted inspections on 80 samples selected from 163 sites that received activity permit usage approvals between December 2022 and May 2023 in 21 cities and counties with Greenbelt Areas. Among these, 26 sites (32.5%) were found to have committed illegal acts.

The illegal acts included 11 cases of illegal construction, 10 cases of change of use, 4 cases of landform alteration, and 1 case of installation of structures. This is a significant improvement compared to the 65% illegal act occurrence rate found during the inspection in the second half of last year.

Since the illegal act occurrence rate remains high, Gyeonggi Province requires city and county officials to conduct on-site investigations during the completion inspection of activity permits before granting usage approval. Under the province’s direction and supervision, the cities and counties are also mandated to conduct special quarterly inspections within one year of usage approval.

Ryu Ho-guk, Director of the Regional Policy Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We conduct special inspections at least once every six months on the status of activity permits and enforcement in the 21 cities and counties with Greenbelt Areas." He added, "We will thoroughly manage post-approval usage to eradicate illegal activities within the Greenbelt Areas."

Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province confirmed that out of 5,450 illegal acts identified through aerial photo analysis from 2020, 5,182 cases (95.1%) have been restored to their original state through administrative actions by the cities and counties.
