A Weapon Found in a Cardboard Box... A Man in His 20s at Express Bus Terminal Says "It's Too Hard"
Arrested by Police for Carrying a Weapon
On the morning of the 4th, the day after the 'Seohyeon Station indiscriminate stabbing' incident, a man in his 20s was arrested by the police while carrying a weapon at the first-floor shopping area of the Gyeongbu Line at the Express Bus Terminal in Seocho-gu, Seoul. Videos and photos of the arrest have been spreading on online communities, and when asked why he was carrying the weapon, he replied, "Because it’s hard."
According to the Seocho Police Station in Seoul on the 4th, at around 10:39 a.m., a report was received stating, "There is a man carrying a knife at the Express Bus Terminal." The police arrested a man in his 20s, identified as Mr. A, on the spot at 10:45 a.m., just six minutes after the report. It was confirmed that no casualties occurred as he did not swing the weapon at passersby.
A 43-second video showing the situation at the time of Mr. A’s arrest spread on social media. In the video, Mr. A, wearing a white long-sleeve shirt and black training pants, is seen sitting on the floor, held by two police officers.
The police checked Mr. A’s belongings to see if there were any dangerous items.
When the police asked, "Let me check. Where is the knife?" Mr. A pointed to a box and replied, "It’s in that box, the box. For self-defense."
When the police opened the lid of the Spam box on the floor, a weapon presumed to be a kitchen knife was found.
When asked if he was carrying the weapon, Mr. A said, "No. I wasn’t carrying it. I just put it away."
When the police said, "But we saw you carrying it," Mr. A began to explain, "I..." When the police asked again, "Why, why?" Mr. A trailed off and answered, "Because it’s too hard..."
The subsequent conversation was unclear due to surrounding noise.
Online, there were suspicions that Mr. A possessed a homemade firearm, but it was confirmed to be a misunderstanding caused by a toy for infants that plays music and lights up. Mr. A was also wearing a plastic toy belt.
Netizens who watched the video claimed that the belt and gun Mr. A was wearing appeared to be props from the Japanese manga 'Kamen Rider.'
The police secured Mr. A’s custody and plan to investigate the exact circumstances of the incident, considering applying for an arrest warrant on charges of special intimidation.
Meanwhile, on the afternoon of the 4th, Police Commissioner Yoon Hee-geun delivered a public statement at the Police Agency in Migeun-dong, Seodaemun-gu, regarding the Seohyeon Station stabbing incident, declaring, "From this moment on, until public anxiety is resolved, we will declare special security activities to respond to heinous crimes with extraordinary determination."
