Sinan-gun Cracks Down on Illegal Modification of Barges for Ankang Nets with Zero Tolerance Policy
Eradication of Illegal Fishing Activities... Indefinite Special Crackdown
Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Park Woo-ryang) announced on the 4th that it will conduct an indefinite special crackdown with prior notice to prevent illegal pre-fishing of modified eel trap barges (commonly known as: Canvas) from the end of the glass eel fishing season every year to protect fishery resources and establish fishing order.
Shinan-gun has so far cracked down on 27 barges for gear cutting and 6 barges for gear removal out of a total of 33 barges.

Illegal modified eel trap fishing is a high-intensity illegal fishing method that recklessly captures fish, disregarding law-abiding fishermen, leading to overfishing of fishery resources and disrupting the distribution order of seasonal seafood. Additionally, illegal fishing gear installed along navigation routes threatens the safe navigation of vessels.
Shinan-gun will also conduct special crackdowns on illegal fishing carried out for livelihood reasons and will induce voluntary removal of illegal modified eel trap fishing using barges. If not complied with, administrative enforcement such as cutting and confiscation of fishing gear will be strictly enforced under a zero-tolerance policy.
A county official stated, “We plan to manage fishery resources and continuously promote indefinite special crackdowns to establish a sound and autonomous fishing order among fishermen.”
