First Harvest of Goheung Rice Secures Early Market Lead for New Crop Rice

Goheung Mall to Start Full-Scale New Rice Sales from Mid-August

Gohung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Young-min) announced on August 2nd that the first new rice of the year was harvested in the Deungam-ri area of Goheung-eup.

The variety harvested that day was Jinokbyae, an early-maturing variety known for its excellent taste, with farmer Shin Bang-su (49 years old) from Deungam Village harvesting 4 hectares. This was 115 days after rice transplanting on April 7th. Out of a total of 30 hectares, the remaining 26 hectares are planned to be harvested by August 16th and sold as new rice through distribution companies ahead of this year’s Chuseok holiday.

Starting with the first rice harvest that day, the county plans to begin full-scale harvesting of early-maturing rice from mid-August at Jukam Farm (15 hectares) and Baunong Farm in Songsan, Podu-myeon (15 hectares), with completion expected by early October.

After demonstrating rice cutting that day, Governor Gong Young-min said, “Although there were difficulties due to heavy rainfall during this year’s monsoon season, we were able to harvest the rice without major damage.” He added, “We will do our best to prevent damage from natural disasters such as typhoons until the rice harvest in the county is complete, and we will strive to ensure that Gohung rice, which has a high-quality brand value, continues to receive consumers’ love through consistent quality maintenance.”

A county official stated, “Out of the total rice cultivation area of 10,991 hectares in Gohung-gun, early-maturing rice accounts for 614 hectares (5.6%). We plan to start full-scale sales of new rice produced locally through Gohung Mall from mid-August.”
