Gwangju Buk-gu "Protect Residents' Safety" Full-Scale Response to Heatwave
On the 31st, Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced that it will strengthen protective measures to help residents stay healthy and safe during the summer heatwave that has fully begun after the rainy season.
This reinforcement of protective measures is a policy to mobilize all available resources to fully respond to protecting residents' safety against the continuous scorching heat following the heatwave warning issued on the 26th.
Buk-gu first began intensive health status checks through on-site visits and mobile safety care targeting 8,391 vulnerable households requiring care, including the elderly, single middle-aged and senior households, and people with disabilities, anticipating that the sweltering heat would continue for some time after the rainy season ended on the 21st.
Additionally, cooling cost support has been completed for welfare facilities such as senior centers, daycare centers, and local children's centers, and for the elderly who are particularly vulnerable to heatwaves, an additional 200,000 KRW cooling cost and cooling cushions will be provided to senior centers designated as heatwave shelters.
Cooperation with private social welfare facilities such as comprehensive social welfare centers, homeless shelters, and rehabilitation facilities will be strengthened by conducting on-site inspections and establishing a real-time monitoring system using KakaoTalk.
Furthermore, about 9,000 bottles of ice-cold water will be stocked and distributed to residents at four neighborhood parks frequently visited by residents (Usan, Yangsan, Munhwa, Ilgok) and 108 outdoor heatwave shelters, and three high-pressure water spraying trucks will be intensively deployed on major arterial roads to mitigate the urban heat island effect.
In addition, using the Community Chest of Korea, heatwave preparedness supplies worth approximately 67 million KRW will be provided to residents exhausted by the heat and in need of care.
