Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) will implement a support project for maintaining empty houses from July 31 to the end of December to improve the quality of life for local residents and contribute to urban development.

Abandoned empty houses are one of the social problems that deteriorate the residential environment of nearby residents by damaging the surrounding aesthetics and frequently causing safety accidents due to the emergence of crime-prone areas. Accordingly, the district has launched the “Empty House Maintenance Support Project” to prevent safety accidents and resolve residents’ inconveniences.

The support targets of this project are: ▲empty houses owned by recipients of the National Basic Livelihood Security Act or low-income households ▲empty houses whose owners agree to rent at half the surrounding market price for more than three years after repair or remodeling ▲empty houses whose owners agree to provide the land as public use for more than three years after demolition.

For empty houses that are usable after repair (grade 1?2 empty houses) and whose owners agree to the condition of renting for more than three years, the district supports 80% of remodeling costs up to a limit of 40 million KRW. For grade 1?2 empty houses owned by recipients of basic livelihood security or low-income residents, the district supports 90% of remodeling costs up to 36 million KRW. This is the first time such repair and remodeling costs are supported among Seoul’s autonomous districts.

For unusable empty houses (grade 3?4 empty houses) whose owners apply for demolition and agree to use the land for public purposes, the district fully supports demolition and utilization costs. The demolished empty house sites will be used as neighborhood gardens, community vegetable gardens, village parking lots, etc., based on residents’ opinions.

The application period for the support project is from July 31 to August 11. For other details such as the application procedure, please contact the Dongdaemun-gu Architectural Safety Center, Architectural Safety General Team.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, “Through this empty house maintenance support project, we will prevent safety accidents in residential areas, improve the residential environment, and contribute to enhancing the quality of life for residents.”
