Gijang-gun Dives into the Sea of Summer Festivals... 'Gaetmaeul Festival' Held
July 29-30 Ilgwang Beach
Busan Gijang-gun (Governor Jeong Jong-bok) will host the 25th Gijang Gaetmaeul Festival, Gijang's first summer festival, at Ilgwang Beach for two days from July 29 to 30, organized by the Gijang Gaetmaeul Festival Promotion Committee.
The Gijang Gaetmaeul Festival is a representative summer sea culture festival that Gijang-gun proudly presents, held at Ilgwang Beach, the setting of writer Oh Young-su's short story "Gaetmaeul" and the filming location of director Kim Soo-yong's 1965 movie adaptation of the same name.
The festival offers a variety of cultural and artistic performances and experience programs utilizing local Gaetmaeul content, providing abundant sights and activities for tourists visiting Ilgwang Beach during the summer vacation season.
On the first day of the festival, July 29, there will be a haenyeo (female diver) parade, an opening ceremony, and the Gaetmaeul concert. On the second day, July 30, the Gaetmaeul musical and another Gaetmaeul concert will take place. A spectacular fireworks display will light up the night sea at Ilgwang, creating unforgettable memories for visitors and marking the grand finale of the festival.
Additionally, various sea and science experience programs will be available throughout the festival. The main experience programs, including underwater tug-of-war, pulling the huritg-mul (a traditional fishing net), and barehanded fishing, will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis at the site. Especially, the "Catch the Golden Fish" event offers abundant prizes to children who catch fish marked with special signs.
Kim Bu-jin, chairman of the Gijang Gaetmaeul Festival Promotion Committee, said, "We have prepared with utmost effort to provide diverse enjoyment and memories for local residents and tourists, so we ask for your great interest and participation."
