Changwon Special City Promotes Seafood Safety ... Alleviating Citizen Anxiety and Boosting Consumption
Focusing on Promoting Seafood Consumption
Changwon City in Gyeongnam Province is intensively promoting events to revitalize and encourage the consumption of seafood, as the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan is expected soon following the IAEA's final report announcement.
The city will widely promote the safety of seafood to citizens to alleviate consumption decline and anxiety. After the rainy season, about 240 participants including the city, the Fisheries Cooperative, fishery managers, and autonomous management communities will hold large-scale campaigns using banners and placards with messages such as "Safe Sea, Safe Seafood" at Changwon Square, Masan Fish Market, and the intersection at Jinhae-gu 3rd Square.
The Marine, Port, and Fisheries Bureau of Changwon Special City, Gyeongnam, is giving a briefing.

To revitalize the weakened consumer sentiment with public officials and public institutions taking the lead, the city will create an atmosphere encouraging seafood consumption by offering local specialty products such as ark shells, mussels, and dried anchovies as lunch menu items in the city cafeteria. Furthermore, a designated Seafood Day will be operated.
Additionally, the city plans to actively carry out seafood consumption campaigns by signing business agreements with the Fisheries Cooperative and local companies, continuously requesting all employees to participate in seafood consumption by using traditional markets and sashimi restaurants.
A seafood purchase rebate event using Changwon Love Gift Certificates will also be promoted, which is expected to greatly contribute to revitalizing seafood consumption.
To promote the reputation and quality of local specialties domestically and internationally, develop sales channels, and encourage consumption, large-scale seafood consumption promotion events (festivals) will also be held.
In the second half of the year, with a total project budget of 174 million KRW, the Jinhae Bay Fresh Seafood Festival is scheduled for September, and the Changwon Mussel Festival will be held in November. Additionally, with a budget of 55 million KRW, seafood sales promotions and tasting events will also be conducted to encourage consumption.
