Ruling Party and Government Pushing to Establish Prime Minister's Office Direct Standing Committee
President Yoon Suk-yeol on the 24th instructed, regarding the normalization of abnormal weather due to climate change, that "relevant ministries and agencies activate a TF (task force) to completely reorganize the disaster response system." This directive aims to prepare recovery and countermeasures suitable for the increasing natural disasters caused by abnormal weather events such as the recent nationwide heavy rain.
President Yoon gave this instruction during his regular weekly meeting with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, according to a briefing by Lee Do-woon, spokesperson for the Presidential Office.
Currently, the ruling party and the government are reportedly working to establish a permanent public-private joint organization under the Prime Minister’s Office to respond to climate disasters, including heavy rainfall.
Recovery from flood damage and the establishment of prevention measures are also being addressed at the National Assembly level. The "Ruling and Opposition Task Force for Flood Recovery and Damage Support" will hold its first meeting on the 26th to begin legislative discussions. Previously, the People Power Party and the Democratic Party of Korea agreed to form a TF consisting of five lawmakers from each party. The TF includes the chief deputy floor leaders from both parties and the party whips from four standing committees related to flood damage, including the National Assembly’s Public Administration and Security Committee.
