Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office Virtual Asset Task Force Launches on 26th... Dedicated to Cryptocurrency Crime
A dedicated investigation team for cryptocurrency crimes will be established within the prosecution. It is expected that the team will not only investigate crimes involving cryptocurrencies but also review the legal aspects such as the securities nature of cryptocurrencies to utilize in investigations.
On the 24th, the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office announced that the Joint Cryptocurrency Investigation Unit, which will be in charge of investigating cryptocurrency-related crimes, will officially launch on the 26th. The launch ceremony will be attended by Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok, Financial Supervisory Service Governor Lee Bok-hyun, and Korea Exchange Chairman Son Byung-doo, among others.

The investigation unit plans to review the legal principles regarding cryptocurrency crimes and the securities nature of cryptocurrencies. Additionally, it will train specialized investigative personnel. The inaugural head of the unit will be Chief Prosecutor Lee Jeong-ryeol of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office Trial Division 3. Chief Prosecutor Lee has accumulated experience in financial investigations, including being seconded to the Financial Supervisory Service. He has also been recognized as a Level 2 Certified Specialist Prosecutor in securities and finance.
