Farmer in China Raising 7 Calves on 5th Floor Apartment Balcony... Ultimately Gives Up Due to Odor and Noise Complaints
Up to 20kg per calf brought onto the veranda
Crying constantly and causing foul odor complaints, ultimately abandoned
A story about a Chinese farmer who tried to raise seven calves on the balcony of his fifth-floor apartment but gave up due to complaints from neighbors is becoming a hot topic among local netizens.
On the 20th (local time), according to the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) and others, a resident living in a rural area in Sichuan Province, western China, raised seven calves on the balcony of his fifth-floor apartment. It is reported that each calf brought onto the balcony weighed between 10 and 20 kg.
However, neighbors filed complaints with the authorities within a day, saying the cows mooed incessantly and the stench was overwhelming.
After receiving the residents' report, the local government dispatched officials to the site on the 17th and removed the calves from the balcony. Although there was a struggle as the owner tried to bring the calves back inside the apartment, all seven calves were eventually taken outside.
SCMP reported, "Most residents of the apartment engage in farming nearby, but some have not abandoned rural habits such as raising chickens on their balconies, which led to this incident." However, residents reportedly demanded that the authorities take action, saying, "Chickens and cows are on a completely different level."
On China's largest social media platform Weibo, videos and photos taken by neighboring residents were posted that day, sparking continuous interest among local netizens.
Local netizens reacted with comments such as, "China is so vast that you witness these rare incidents," "I've seen people raising chickens or ducks, but this is really the first time for cows," and "It's not only a nuisance to neighbors but also abuse to the cows."
Meanwhile, there have been several controversies recently in China regarding animals kept in apartments. In March, a story was reported by local online media about a pet chicken raised on a balcony in an apartment in Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, that died in a fire caused by a cigarette butt thrown from the upstairs apartment, drawing public attention.
