The LAIDD Mentoring Project was launched this year as part of the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Health Industry Development Institute’s ‘AI Utilization New Drug Development Education and Promotion Project’ to cultivate convergent talents who can be immediately deployed in the AI new drug development field.

The trainees were selected through a first practical test and a second mentor interview from 125 applicants. Among the 40 trainees, 35 hold master’s or doctoral degrees, and the group includes 10 employees from pharmaceutical and bio companies, 6 from AI and IT companies, as well as personnel from hospitals, research institutes, and university and graduate students. The final selected trainees will be divided into 10 teams of 4 members each to carry out AI new drug development projects proposed by mentors over 14 weeks.

The association explained that since the trainees come from diverse majors such as bioinformatics, genomics, chemoinformatics, data science, pharmacy, medical science, and Korean medicine, they will carry out team projects based on their respective background knowledge and expertise.

An association official said, “We expect that while solving practical field tasks, team members will combine and apply each other’s skills and knowledge to grow as convergent talents.”
