Mini 2nd Album Release Today Ahead of Debut 1st Anniversary
‘Cool With You’ MV Featuring Tony Leung Sparks Attention
The group 'NewJeans' mini 2nd album 'Get Up' has surpassed 1.7 million pre-orders, signaling a strong impact.
According to album distributor YG PLUS on the 21st, NewJeans' mini 2nd album 'Get Up,' released at 1 PM that day, recorded 1.72 million pre-orders as of the previous day. This ranks as the 3rd highest pre-order volume in K-pop girl group history, following BLACKPINK's 2nd full album 'Born Pink' with 2 million pre-orders and aespa's mini 3rd album 'My World' with 1.8 million pre-orders.
This figure is more than double compared to their previous work. NewJeans' single 'OMG,' released in January, recorded about 800,000 pre-orders. Since then, the album has been steadily loved, selling a total of approximately 1.57 million copies (as of June).
'Get Up' is expected to become NewJeans' third million-seller following their debut album 'New Jeans' and the single 'OMG.'
The agency Adore stated, "Considering the strengthening global fandom and NewJeans' elevated status in the mainstream pop market, selling 2 million copies of a single album is not impossible."
'Get Up' contains a total of six tracks. It features a sophisticated sensibility across various genres such as UK garage, Jersey club, funk, house, R&B, and Euro pop.
Two of the triple title tracks were released earlier. The refreshing and lively 'Super Shy' was pre-released, and the dreamy 'Cool With You' was introduced first with a cinematic music video.
The remaining title track 'ETA' was showcased at a recent fan meeting but remains shrouded in mystery. However, the 'ETA' teaser hinted at a fast beat conveying a sense of speed and a 'favela funk' vibe with punk elements.
Other anticipated tracks include the pre-released prologue song 'New Jeans,' the interlude track 'Get Up,' and the epilogue song 'ASAP.'
NewJeans also focused on performance in this album. They prepared various styles of performances matching the mood of the six songs. In 'Super Shy,' they delivered a lively energy with strong hand and arm movements in a waacking dance. 'New Jeans' featured a free-spirited hip-hop style, while 'Cool With You' incorporated contemporary dance blended with modern dance. The 'ETA' to be released that day promises a dynamic performance fitting its exciting beat.
The album's impressive contributors also draw attention. Led by Min Hee-jin, CEO and general producer of Adore (ADOR), who created NewJeans' mega hits, producers Lee O-gong (250) and Frank (Park Jin-su) reunited once again.
Musicians from Beats & Natives (BANA) including Lee O-gong and Frank formed the core team. Rapper Beenzino, praised for his 2nd full album 'Novitski' released after seven years, participated in writing lyrics for 'ETA.' Rapper Kim Sim-ya, active as a member of the hip-hop duo 'XXX' with Frank, contributed to the lyrics of 'Super Shy.'
Director Shin Woo-seok of Dolphin Kidnap Crew, who directed the viral music videos for NewJeans' previous songs 'Ditto' and 'OMG,' directed the 'Cool With You' music video. The video, a reinterpretation of the Greek myth 'Eros and Psyche,' featured actors Liang Chaowei (Tony Leung) and Jung Ho-yeon, attracting attention.
Previously, 'Super Shy' dominated major domestic music charts and set new personal records by ranking 59th on the UK Official Singles Chart and 66th on the US Billboard Hot 100.
