Kim Ki-hyun Returns to Korea · Lee Jae-myung Visits Osong
On the 16th, both ruling and opposition parties emphasized the need to do their utmost for swift recovery efforts and to prevent additional damage following the heavy rains that caused widespread damage across the country.
Yoon Hee-seok, spokesperson for the People Power Party, stated in a commentary on the day, "We will do our best for proactive prevention of rain damage and rapid recovery."
Spokesperson Yoon said, "In particular, since all personnel and resources from the military, police, fire department, and local governments are being fully mobilized for the rescue operation of the flooded underground passage in Osong, Cheongju, we will do our best to complete the rescue as quickly as possible," adding, "We ask related ministries and local governments to do their utmost to ensure that those temporarily evacuated do not experience inconvenience."
Spokesperson Yoon also emphasized, "Above all, the bigger concern is the forecasted rain until next week," adding, "This is a time when proactive efforts to prevent casualties and accidents are even more necessary."
Jeong Woo-taek, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly from the same party, urged, "The government must prepare for heavy rain as if it were excessive," and called for "installing flood prevention facilities in low-lying areas such as semi-basement houses, underground parking lots, and subways, and thoroughly inspecting whether they are functioning properly."
Park Kwang-on, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, also emphasized on Facebook, "There should be no more casualties from heavy rain and floods, and property damage must be reduced." Floor leader Park urged, "The government and local governments should mobilize all available resources to fully prepare for the situation and rescue lives, and maintain an emergency work system until the monsoon completely passes."
Floor leader Park also stressed, "The government should thoroughly assess the damage situation and prepare swift and sufficient financial support measures," adding, "Declaring a special disaster area is more effective the sooner it is done. Review should begin immediately." He further added, "The Democratic Party will also establish an emergency system and support recovery efforts together with all regional committees and volunteers."
Meanwhile, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, visited the site of the flooded underground passage in Osong, Cheongju, where casualties occurred due to the heavy rain, on the morning of the same day.
