South Korea, US, and Japan Conduct Missile Defense Drill in East Sea... Responding to North Korea's ICBM
Participation of Three Countries Including Yulgok Yi I-class Aegis Destroyer
On the 16th, South Korea, the United States, and Japan conducted a missile defense exercise in the East Sea international waters in response to North Korea's nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) provocations.
According to the Navy, the exercise involved Aegis destroyers from the three countries: South Korea's ROKS Yulgok Yi I, the U.S. Navy's USS John Finn, and Japan's JS Maya.
The exercise focused on practicing procedures for the three countries' warships to respond to a simulated ballistic missile target, assuming a scenario of North Korean ballistic missile provocations.
This marks the fourth maritime missile defense exercise conducted by South Korea, the United States, and Japan since the inauguration of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration.
The exercise appears to have been conducted as a countermeasure after North Korea escalated provocations by launching a space launch vehicle on May 31 and firing the solid-fueled ICBM Hwasong-18 on the 12th.
