Chungnam Seosan and Hongseong Medical Centers Designated as 'Dementia Safe Hospitals' by Ministry of Health and Welfare
Seosan Medical Center and Hongseong Medical Center have been designated as the first Dementia Relief Hospitals in the Chungnam region.
According to Chungnam Province on the 8th, Dementia Relief Hospitals are hospital-level medical institutions equipped with personnel, facilities, and equipment to provide specialized medical services related to dementia diagnosis, treatment, and care, designated by the Minister of Health and Welfare.
The purpose of operation is to provide early and intensive treatment for patients with delirium and Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) to support their rapid return to the community.
Dementia Relief Hospitals must have at least one dedicated ward with no more than 60 beds capable of intensive treatment for dementia patients.
Additionally, there must be single rooms for intensive treatment of behavioral and psychological symptoms, and a specialized dementia ward operation team composed of specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, or psychiatry, nurses who have completed dementia specialized training courses, occupational therapists, and clinical psychologists, capable of providing customized management throughout the entire process from admission to discharge.
Previously, the province promoted functional enhancement projects at public nursing hospitals and medical centers within the province to treat severe dementia patients, establishing a total of 263 dementia-specialized beds.

Cho Dae-ho, Director of Welfare and Health Bureau of Chungnam Province, said, “With the designation of Dementia Relief Hospitals, Chungnam can now provide specialized medical services for both mild and severe dementia patients,” and added, “Chungnam Province will continue to strive to create a dementia-friendly environment so that dementia patients and their families can worry less about treatment and care and live stably.”
