Operation of Commuter Buses for Middle and High School Students in Incheon... 27 Hydrogen Buses Deployed
A dedicated school bus service to improve commuting conditions for middle and high school students in urban areas will be operated in Incheon.
On the 3rd, the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education held an opening ceremony for the 'Student Success Bus' at the Incheon Student Safety Experience Center in Namdong-gu, Incheon. The Student Success Bus is a student welfare project that helps middle and high school students who face difficulties commuting due to poor transportation infrastructure.
The service is divided into six zones: Songdo, Cheongna·Gyeongseo, Geomdan, Yeongjong, Seochang·Namchon, and Bupyeong, with a total of 27 buses, each with a capacity of 45 seats, deployed.
After finalizing detailed routes and operating times, the Office of Education plans to begin a pilot operation of the Student Success Bus from the 12th. Each bus will have one commuting assistant on board to manage students' boarding, alighting, and safety.
While other cities and provinces have operated school buses, these were mainly to support students in rural areas or those affected by school consolidations. However, Incheon’s Office of Education is leading the operation to improve urban commuting conditions, focusing on developing areas.
Notably, the Student Success Bus will be the first in the nation to introduce hydrogen buses to raise environmental awareness.
At the opening ceremony, the Office of Education signed a business agreement with the Ministry of Environment, Incheon City, SK E&S, Hyundai Motor Company, and others to introduce hydrogen school buses. Each organization and company agreed to cooperate on policy support for expanding hydrogen school buses and expanding charging station infrastructure.
The Office of Education plans to operate the school bus service in more areas starting next year after reviewing and improving the pilot project conducted this year.
