At the ceremony, Mayor Lee Kang-deok, who is currently undergoing medical treatment, personally attended to celebrate the historic 50th anniversary of Pohang Steelworks.
At the meeting held prior to the main event, Mayor Lee expressed his gratitude for POSCO Group’s efforts to implement the coexistence agreement related to the decision to relocate the POSCO holding company headquarters to Pohang earlier this year and the establishment of the Future Technology Research Institute’s Pohang main campus. He emphasized, “However, the genuine and complete implementation of the agreement must be achieved so that the holding company headquarters and the research institute’s main campus can perform their practical functions and roles.”
He also requested joint discussions on active new investments in emerging industries such as secondary batteries for the mutual growth of Pohang and POSCO Group.
At this occasion, Mayor Lee stressed that in the current situation where local extinction is accelerating, companies must overcome this together with local residents, and requested a prompt visit by Chairman Choi to Pohang City Hall to discuss this matter.
In his congratulatory speech, the mayor said, “I sincerely congratulate the 50th anniversary of the comprehensive completion of the first phase facilities of POSCO Pohang Steelworks together with the 500,000 citizens of Pohang,” and added, “I thank all the executives and employees who are working hard on site even at this moment, and I hope POSCO will continue to grow into a beloved national company through new investments.”
He also emphasized, “We must never forget that there were Pohang citizens who willingly gave up their living spaces and endured dust and odors for the growth of POSCO, contributing to national development as POSCO rose to become a global national company.”

We plan a total investment of 121 trillion won by 2030, of which 73 trillion won will be invested domestically, including Pohang, to strengthen eco-friendly low-carbon competitiveness.”
National Assembly member Kim Byeong-wook said, “As POSTECH is promoting a research-oriented medical school, if POSCO actively leads the establishment of a smart hospital, the establishment of the medical school will gain more momentum, so I request active consideration.” He also suggested, “Furthermore, if POSCO Holdings’ headquarters is newly built in the old downtown areas such as Haedo and Songdo-dong in Pohang, it will serve as a catalyst for revitalizing the city center.”
