Gwacheon City to Become a City of 140,000 by 2035
The population of Gwacheon City is expected to reach 140,000 by 2035, double the current population of 79,000.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 29th that it approved the '2035 Gwacheon Urban Master Plan (draft)' submitted by Gwacheon City.
This urban master plan is the highest-level statutory spatial plan presenting the future and long-term development direction of Gwacheon City.
According to the main contents, the target population for 2035 was set at approximately 140,000, nearly double the current 79,000, considering the population influx from various development projects.
Additionally, out of the total administrative area (35.87㎢), 2.482㎢ of developable land for urban development was designated as planned urbanization land, 5.470㎢ of existing developed land as urbanized land, and the remaining 27.918㎢ as conservation land, finalizing the land use plan.
The urban spatial structure was changed from the previous '1 center, 2 sub-centers' to '1 downtown (center), 2 regional centers (south and north)' considering changes in internal and external conditions such as the development of the 3rd phase new town and expansion of the metropolitan transportation network, as well as connectivity with surrounding areas.
Taking into account the regional characteristics of Gwacheon City, the urban development axes were set as two main growth axes heading from downtown to regional centers (towards Seoul and Anyang) and one sub-growth axis linked with Pangyo.
The living zones are planned into three areas: north, central, and south, and according to the development concept, medical bio-health industry, 6th industry (floriculture industry), and advanced knowledge-based industries were proposed as new strategies for promoting a self-sufficient city.
The main transportation plans reflect metropolitan transportation projects such as the Wirye-Gwacheon Line and the Metropolitan Area Express Railway (GTX-C).

Furthermore, Gwacheon City plans a complex transfer center linked with the 3rd phase new town and presented plans to expand eco-friendly transportation means and infrastructure for carbon neutrality.
