Transformation of a Household Buried in Trash... Seodaemun-gu's Public-Private Cooperation Shines
Housing environment improvement project carried out over the past three weeks for a household in Hongje 2-dong that was filled with piles of garbage
Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Seongheon) announced on the 29th that it has conducted a housing environment improvement project over the past three weeks targeting a household in Hongje 2-dong that was filled with piles of trash.
The target household was a single middle-aged resident living alone in a semi-basement, where mold had spread throughout the entire house and garbage was left unattended, resulting in poor living conditions. However, the resident had opposed any outside intervention.
In this house, the lights in the rooms did not work, making them too dark to use, the living room was filled with trash, and electrical wires were hanging everywhere, posing significant risks of fire and safety accidents.
Accordingly, the local community center obtained consent through continuous visits and persuasion, allowing the housing environment improvement project to commence.
As a result of a public-private integrated case meeting to resolve the complex issues of the resident, various welfare resources were connected, including ▲waste disposal by the Seodaemun Housing Safety Comprehensive Center ▲emergency support temporary housing (stepping stone housing) provided by SH Corporation ▲Seoul City's Hope House Repair Project ▲and the Hope Ondol Vulnerable Household Support Project by Hong Eun Comprehensive Social Welfare Center.
Moreover, with the participation of the Hongje 2-dong Community Security Council (Chairperson Kang Jaesuk), extensive support and improvements were made possible.
While the resident lived in the temporary housing, house repairs such as mold removal, electrical wiring, wallpapering, and sink installation were carried out through the Hope House Repair Project. The local community security council conducted a thorough cleaning before the resident moved back and provided daily necessities such as bedding and cooking utensils.
In addition, through the cooperation of various public and private organizations, including pest control and support for home appliances, the resident’s house was transformed completely from its previous state.
Kang Jaesuk, Chairperson of the Hongje 2-dong Community Security Council, said, “It was very impressive to see many small efforts come together to create a big change,” and added, “We will continue to identify and support households in need of housing environment improvements.”
Lee Seongheon, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, stated, “We plan to conduct continuous monitoring of the target household to prevent trash from accumulating again,” and emphasized, “We will continue to do our best to discover and support vulnerable households in crisis early through public-private cooperation.”
