Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Soo-hee) announced on the 29th that it will drastically improve the intersection in front of Seonsa Elementary School to ensure the safety of children's school routes.
The intersection is located within the construction area of the extension of Subway Line 8 (Byeollae Line). Construction has been ongoing for more than five years since 2017, causing significant inconvenience for children's commuting and safety.
In particular, the internal distance of the intersection was excessively long, and there was a constant risk of traffic accidents due to conflicts between vehicles using Olympic-ro during rush hours and students crossing the crosswalk, as well as vehicle stops and tailgating within the intersection.
Accordingly, the district continuously consulted with the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Urban Infrastructure Headquarters and the construction company, and held several on-site meetings with related agencies including Seonsa Elementary School, the Road Traffic Authority, Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and Gangdong Police Station to devise the optimal improvement plan.
As a result of these efforts, the final improvement plan was derived.
The main content includes creating the existing intersection at a right angle to separate it from the intersection in front of Seonsa Elementary School's main gate and securing waiting space for vehicles.
Also, the main school route intersection in front of Seonsa Elementary School's main gate will be equipped with a diagonal crosswalk, blocking the risk of conflicts with vehicles during crosswalk signals and eliminating the inconvenience of having to cross the crosswalk twice.
The district conducted a resident opinion survey on the derived intersection improvement plan in April and requested the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Urban Infrastructure Headquarters to reflect the plan. The plan was finalized after passing the review by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency Traffic Safety Deliberation Committee on June 20.
The construction is scheduled to be completed in the second half of this year, coinciding with the completion of Subway Line 8.
In addition, considering the school commuting area of Seonsa Elementary School, safety will be secured by installing ▲expanded child protection zones ▲ground traffic lights ▲voice guidance assist devices ▲runway-type crosswalks ▲speed enforcement cameras ▲yellow carpets.
