Namjung Region Council Proposes Construction of Expressway Between Gwangju and Goheung (Naro)
Deliberation on Joint Proposals and Explanation of Local Government Issues
Gong Young-min, former governor of Goheung County, Jeollanam-do, attended the 22nd regular meeting of the South Coast Southern Central Region Council held at the Goheung Buncheong Cultural Museum on the 21st, where they discussed the development direction and joint cooperation of the South Coast Southern Central Region.
The nine cities and counties attending this regular meeting toured the planned exhibition hall of the Goheung Buncheong Cultural Museum, deliberated and resolved council agenda items and joint proposals, and provided information on each local government's current promotional issues.
On that day, Gong Young-min, governor of Goheung County, explained the joint proposal for the construction of a highway between Gwangju and Goheung (Naro Space Center) to improve accessibility to the Naro Space Center in preparation for the full-scale aerospace era, and led strategic cooperation among the cities and counties belonging to the South Coast Southern Central Region Council.
This joint proposal is expected to serve as a catalyst for establishing an aerospace industry belt centered on ‘Goheung’ and ‘Sacheon’ and fostering industry-academia-research cooperation, through initial infrastructure expansion, as the axis of South Korea’s aerospace industry is located in the South Coast Southern Central Region.
In his greeting, Gong Young-min, governor of Goheung County, said, “Goheung County will open a new era for the South Coast by securing the first domestic UAM (Urban Air Mobility) demonstration site and leading the commercialization of UAM in the tourism sector,” adding, “We will make every effort to grow into an aerospace hub city as a growth base for the space launch vehicle industry and drone aviation industry.”
Meanwhile, the South Coast Southern Central Region Development Council is an administrative consultative body established in 2011 for East-West harmony, joint development of Yeongnam and Honam regions, and mutual cooperation. It consists of nine cities and counties: Yeosu, Suncheon, Gwangyang, Goheung, and Boseong in Jeollanam-do, and Jinju, Sacheon, Hadong, and Namhae in Gyeongsangnam-do. The member cities cooperate for mutual harmony and win-win development.
