Chairman Kwon Young-geol of the National Architecture Policy Committee Visits Garden Expo
Touring the Entire Expo Site Including the National Garden and Wetlands
On the 20th, Suncheon City in Jeollanam-do announced that 20 members of the Presidential National Architecture Policy Committee, including Chairman Kwon Young-geol, visited the Suncheonman International Garden Expo site.
Chairman Kwon Young-geol was appointed as the honorary ambassador of the Suncheonman International Garden Expo last December. He has been continuously cooperating with Suncheon City (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) to successfully host the 2023 Garden Expo, including the creation of the Seoul Garden and Seoul Design Garden within the Suncheonman National Garden.
Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu welcomed Chairman Kwon and the delegation by personally explaining the Ocheon Green Plaza and Green Island sites.
After receiving a briefing on the expo from the general director, they carefully inspected various locations such as the Sunset Garden, Kids Garden, Stream Path Plaza, Shillange, Seoul Garden, and Seoul Design Garden, and toured the entire expo site including the National Garden and Suncheonman Wetland.
Chairman Kwon listened to the storytelling of the Kids Garden, which was directly designed and created by Mayor Noh and his staff, and said, “The Kids Garden is a place for national education.” The committee members walked along the four-season grass that decorates the area from the Sunset Garden to the Kids Garden, responding with comments such as, “It’s new to be able to walk freely on the grass rather than just looking at it,” and “The pride of the citizens who hosted the Garden Expo is remarkable.”
They also showed deep interest in the Stream Path Plaza with its clear flowing stream, saying, “It’s excellent. It’s a perfect content for a summer garden.”
For the final course of the tour, they took the Sky Cube to the Suncheonman Wetland and closely observed the reed fields and wetland ecosystem along the deck path. Chairman Kwon added, “There is a saying that ‘Suncheon prospers, and Yeokcheon declines,’ so I will share Suncheon’s case widely with local governments nationwide.”
The National Architecture Policy Committee is a presidential committee that deliberates important policies in the field of architecture and coordinates architectural administration among related ministries to comprehensively promote cross-ministerial architectural policies.
Chairman Kwon Young-geol is an urban design expert who has served as the head of the Design Seoul Headquarters and chairman of the Seoul Design Foundation. In March this year, he was appointed chairman of the 7th National Architecture Policy Committee and emphasized that the slogan “A country like a park, a city like a garden” will serve as a testing ground to realize the ideology contained in the new slogan regarding Yongsan National Park and Yongsan area development.
Meanwhile, on the same day, the mayor and council chairman of Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, also visited the expo site and toured the National Garden and wetland area.
