Korea Airports Corporation Secures Contract to Supply Self-Developed Tactical Navigation Equipment to Republic of Korea Air Force
Korea Airports Corporation announced on the 16th that it has been selected as the final project executor for the Republic of Korea Air Force's second phase of the 'Tactical Air Navigation Equipment (TACAN) Deployment' project.
Through this project, the corporation will deliver and install TACAN equipment, developed in-house, at Air Force airfields by September 2024. It will also conduct training for equipment operation.
The corporation previously secured the first phase of the TACAN delivery project in 2019, targeting nine Air Force airfields. With the successful acquisition of this second phase, it plans to completely replace all foreign-made equipment at Air Force bases with its own domestically developed TACAN.
Until the corporation developed TACAN domestically in 2016, the domestic defense market was entirely dependent on foreign equipment. By fully domesticating the equipment through this project, it will prevent foreign currency outflow. It is expected to greatly contribute to strengthening military capabilities and self-reliant defense by enabling rapid technical support, parts supply, and efficient maintenance through equipment standardization.
TACAN serves as a beacon in the sky, providing direction and distance information to operating military aircraft. Yoon Hyung-jung, President of Korea Airports Corporation, stated, “The expansion of domestically produced equipment in our Air Force is a very meaningful achievement,” and added, “We will continue to accelerate the localization of equipment for aviation safety to enhance national competitiveness and contribute to public safety.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is enhancing equipment reliability through performance verification of the corporation’s Tactical Air Navigation Equipment (TACAN). It is actively supporting the establishment of systems to open new markets so that the navigation equipment developed by the corporation can be supplied domestically and internationally.
