Police Secure Custody of 3 Foreigners Who Fled Police Substation in Group... 7 Others Sought
The police have secured the custody of 3 out of 10 foreigners who were caught on the spot for illegal gambling charges and escaped through the window of the police substation.
According to the Gwangsan Police Station in Gwangju on the 11th, one Vietnamese national who escaped through the window of the police substation was apprehended. The police captured him hiding somewhere in Gwangju through analysis of closed-circuit television (CCTV) and inquiries with people nearby.
Two other foreigners fled as far as Mokpo City in Jeollanam-do and Wanju County in Jeollabuk-do but voluntarily turned themselves in to the police as the investigation tightened.
All three foreigners whose custody was secured by the police were found to be illegal immigrants.
The mass escape of foreigners occurred at around 6:40 a.m. that day at the Wolgok Police Substation in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. Twenty-three Vietnamese nationals who were caught gambling illegally at a house were waiting at the substation when 10 of them took advantage of the lax surveillance and escaped through a window.

The police are tracking the whereabouts of the remaining seven escapees but are reportedly having difficulty apprehending them. Among the 10 who escaped, six are illegal immigrants, and language barriers have made inquiries with nearby people challenging. Their escape routes vary, and it is also reported to be difficult to distinguish the foreigners’ appearances and clothing.
