President Zelensky Visits Kherson Region Following Dam Collapse
Discussion on Support for Affected Residents and Military Situation
Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, visited the Kherson region in southern Ukraine where a dam collapse occurred, AFP reported on the 8th (local time).
President Zelensky announced via Telegram that he visited the Kherson area and explained, "We discussed the operational status of the region due to the disaster, evacuation of residents from potential flood zones, lifting of the emergency caused by the dam explosion, and organizing living support for the flooded areas." He added, "We also discussed the restoration of the ecosystem in this area and the outlook on military operations in the artificially created disaster zone."
He also said, "It is important to allocate funds to compensate the affected residents and to develop a program to relocate businesses within the Kherson region."
On the 6th, the Kakhovka Dam in Kherson province was destroyed, flooding nearby villages. Most of the affected areas are under Russian occupation. The governor of Kherson said about 2,000 people have left the affected areas.
