"Take a Break During Midday Heat Waves" ... Daegu-si Dong-gu Operates Heat Relief Shelters
The Daegu Dong-gu Urban Regeneration Support Center is operating the ‘Ongdalmaru’ heatwave shelter to prevent heatstroke among heat-vulnerable groups and mobile workers during the peak of the heatwave.
The name Ongdalmaru is a compound of ‘Ongdalsam’ and ‘Maru,’ meaning ‘there is a wooden floor at the spring where everyone who comes can rest comfortably.’
The Ongdalmaru heatwave shelter, which opened on the 1st of this month, will operate for about three months until August, with operating hours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays (Monday to Friday), approximately five hours a day.
The shelter was created by utilizing idle space within the community area on the second floor of the Dong-gu Urban Regeneration Support Center near Sinam Park in Sinam-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu. During the operation period, this space will be open as a shared area for local residents, serving not only as a heatwave shelter but also as a community space.
The ‘Ongdalmaru’ heatwave shelter is available to any local resident seeking relief from the heat. To use the shelter, visitors write in the guestbook, receive ice water and heatwave prevention items (fans) according to the administrator’s guidance, and rest in the designated area.
Additionally, mobile phone chargers and emergency medicines are provided, and an emergency contact system has been established at the Ongdalmaru heatwave shelter for prompt response in case of urgent situations.
