Former Prosecutor Accused of Receiving 100 Million from Jeong Un-ho Sentenced to 2 Years in First Trial
A former chief prosecutor was sentenced to prison in the first trial for receiving 100 million won in cash from Jeong Un-ho, the former CEO of Nature Republic.
On the 7th, the Criminal Division 21-3 of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judges Kim Mi-kyung, Heo Kyung-moo, Kim Jeong-gon) sentenced former chief prosecutor Park to two years in prison for violating the Attorney-at-Law Act. They also ordered a fine of 92 million won. Considering Park's poor health, he was not detained in court.
The court stated, "The defendant, while holding the position of prosecutor, had a public duty to uphold the value of integrity, but committed the crime for personal gain," but also noted, "Considering that he has no prior criminal record and sincerely participated in the trial."
Immediately after the sentencing, former chief prosecutor Park shed tears, saying, "I didn't do it, this is absurd."
Earlier, Park was prosecuted on charges of receiving a bribe and 100 million won in cash from former CEO Jeong in 2014. Jeong requested Park, a high school junior of a senior official at the Board of Audit and Inspection, to cover up an audit related to Nature Republic, and Park was investigated for demanding money, claiming "expenses are necessary."
The Ministry of Justice dismissed him in May 2017 and imposed a disciplinary surcharge of 100 million won after the allegations surfaced.
