Shinhan Bank announced on the 5th that Kim Tae-han (vocal), the 10th winner of the Shinhan Music Award, achieved a great feat by winning the '2023 Queen Elisabeth Competition' in Belgium, one of the world's three major classical music competitions.
Kim Tae-han, the winner of the vocal category at the 10th Shinhan Music Award in 2018, graduated from Seoul National University’s vocal department and is currently selected as a young artist at the Berlin State Opera, where he is scheduled to perform for two years starting from the 2023 September season.
The Shinhan Music Award was launched in 2009 through donations from Shinhan Bank employees with the aim of discovering promising pure domestic classical musicians. Awardees receive various benefits to help them grow as musicians, including ▲a scholarship of 16 million KRW ▲masterclasses and concert attendance with renowned overseas university professors ▲regular concert opportunities at Sejong Chamber Hall.
So far, 61 winners have been produced, including pianist Park Jin-hyung (1st place at the 2016 Prague Spring Piano Competition) from the 6th award, cellist Kim Ga-eun (1st place at the 2022 Irving Klein International String Competition) from the 10th award, and cellist Han Jae-min (1st place at the 2021 Enescu Competition) from the 12th award, who continue to actively perform both domestically and internationally.
Kim Tae-han participated in the Shinhan Music Award performance festival ‘S-Classic Week’ on August 18 last year and has been continuously involved in Shinhan Bank’s ‘With Concert,’ which features performances with musicians with developmental disabilities, sharing his talent through beautiful performances.
A representative of the Shinhan Music Award said, “More and more winners are challenging famous overseas competitions, so we are increasing realistic performance opportunities and supporting the recording of performance pieces at Shinhan Art Hall.” He added, “In the case of baritone Kim Tae-han, he presented pieces he had recorded several times in this competition and we are proud to have achieved good results.”
Shinhan Bank is currently conducting the 15th Shinhan Music Award and plans to hold the final competition over two days on the 10th (violin, cello) and 11th (piano, vocal). The event will be live-streamed on YouTube, allowing anyone to watch the competition in real time.
