Bruce Willis's Daughter: "Dad Lost Hearing and Has Dementia Due to 'Die Hard'"
Aphasia Diagnosed with FTD One Year After Retirement
Family Members "Don't Want to Lose Hope"
Hollywood actor Bruce Willis (68) showed symptoms of hearing loss long before being diagnosed with dementia, his daughter Tallulah Willis (29) revealed.
According to the British daily The Guardian on the 1st (local time), Tallulah, born to Bruce Willis and actress Demi Moore, wrote in a contribution to the fashion magazine Vogue, "Dad's unusual symptoms started with vague unresponsiveness," adding, "I thought the movie 'Die Hard' had ruined his ears."
In her article, Tallulah recalled, "Dad often did not respond to what I said." At the time, she thought it was because he was indifferent to her, his child from a previous marriage, due to his newly formed family.
Tallulah also revealed that she suffered from depression and alcohol dependence. "I had anorexia for four years and was hospitalized at 25 for depression treatment. I was also diagnosed with ADHD and took medication. I was struggling with a wrecked body and couldn't take care of Dad," she said.
She continued, "Even in sadness, I find comfort in trying to care for Dad. He still knows who I am. He goes back and forth between the present and the past, and unpredictable changes happen quickly, but I don't want to lose hope."
She added, "This is a very special time for the family," and said, "Dad is also happy to be with the family."
Bruce Willis retired in March last year after being diagnosed with aphasia caused by brain damage affecting his communication abilities. In February, Bruce's family announced that he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). It has been one year since the dementia diagnosis.
FTD is known to affect patients' behavior and personality and cause language impairments.
Bruce Willis gained worldwide fame with the popular action movie 'Die Hard' (1988). He won the Golden Globe and Emmy Awards for this film. In 2006, he was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He also appeared in 'Color of Night' (1994) and 'The Sixth Sense' (1999). His last film before retirement was 'Mutant Escape,' released in April.
