Daewoong Foundation Announces Winners of the 4th Daewoong Academic Awards
From Chronic Metabolic Diseases to Liver Cancer Treatment Candidates
"Recognized for Contributions to Diversifying Research Fields"
Daewoong Foundation announced the recipients of the '4th Daewoong Academic Award' on the 26th, following the announcement on the 25th. The awardees are Professor Nam Ga-eun of the Department of Family Medicine at Korea University Guro Hospital, Professor Ahn Ji-hyun of Hanyang University College of Medicine, and Professor Lee Ho-gyu of Yonsei University College of Medicine.
Professor Nam Ga-eun conducted research identifying factors related to the occurrence and prognosis of chronic metabolic diseases such as ▲metabolic syndrome ▲obesity ▲diabetes using big data. She was recognized for her contributions through studies utilizing public big data, with many recent research results published in top-tier journals.
Professor Ahn Ji-hyun, a clinician and researcher specializing in liver diseases and liver cancer, was acknowledged for her research achievements in identifying candidate substances for the advancement of liver cancer treatment. Professor Ahn elucidated the optimal strategies for monitoring recurrence after curative surgery in liver cancer patients and the genomic characteristics of primary liver cancers (hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma) patients.
Lastly, Professor Lee Ho-gyu is conducting clinical epidemiology research, precision medicine cohort studies, and disease prediction research using medical big data in the fields of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and metabolic diseases.
Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Professor Nam said, "The Daewoong Academic Award selects recipients based on academic indicators such as citation indices, which highly values its fairness. Therefore, the award is significant not only for researchers' contributions but also for their achievements. Moving forward, I will continue to dedicate myself to research for the advancement of the domestic medical science industry and strive to create a research culture where young emerging medical scientists can challenge new research."
Meanwhile, the Daewoong Academic Award by Daewoong Foundation is a major program of the academic training support project aimed at encouraging creative research by emerging medical scientists. Its purpose is to discover outstanding young medical scientists who have contributed to the academic development in the field of medical science and to widely publicize their achievements to contribute to academic research. The award is selected from young medical scientists under 45 years old in Korea who have published research papers with high social contribution within the past five years. Awardees receive a plaque and a prize of 30 million KRW.
A representative of Daewoong Foundation stated, "The Daewoong Academic Award is a representative academic support project that has inspired pride among young medical scientists to challenge innovative research that did not exist before and lead the domestic medical science industry. We will continue to support young medical scientists to take on new perspectives in research in line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution."
