Yeosu City to Begin Construction of 'Yeondeungcheon Retention Basin' Within the Year... 38.9 Billion KRW Invested
Maintenance of Reservoirs and River Facilities with a Scale of 350,000 Tons by 2025
Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) is expected to begin construction within the year on the ‘Yeondeungcheon Retention Basin,’ a project aimed at preventing flood damage in the areas surrounding Yeondeungcheon Stream.
According to Yeosu City on the 17th, the ‘Yeondeungcheon Disaster Prevention Project’ has been underway since 2018 and will continue through 2025, with a total investment of 38.9 billion KRW, including 25.3 billion KRW from national and provincial funds.
This project involves installing a retention basin with a capacity of 350,000 tons capable of handling floods with a 200-year return period, and systematically maintaining river facilities to create a safe river environment protected from natural disasters.
Since August of last year, the city has been compensating for all land parcels and obstacles included in the Yeondeungcheon Disaster Prevention Project, and plans to complete compensation for subdivided parcels by the first half of this year, with full-scale construction scheduled for the second half.
As a result, the Yeondeungcheon Retention Basin will help prevent backflow and flooding of the stream by properly distributing floodwaters during heavy rains, while the clean water stored in the basin during normal times will be used as maintenance water for Yeondeungcheon Stream.
Additionally, convenience facilities such as walking trails, observation decks, and bicycle paths will be installed, transforming the Yeondeungcheon Retention Basin into a waterfront space where citizens can visit and relax.
A city official stated, “Once the project is completed, flood damage and safety accidents in the Yeondeungcheon area will be greatly reduced,” and added, “We will focus administrative efforts on carrying out administrative procedures to ensure there are no delays in starting construction within the year.”
