Pohang City, together with Gyeongbuk Province and POSTECH, will hold a "National Assembly Policy Forum on Establishing a Research-Oriented Medical School for Training Physician-Scientists" on the 24th at the National Assembly Members' Office Building, Conference Room 1.

View original imageThe forum, scheduled for 2 p.m., is hosted by National Assembly members Kim Jeong-jae and Kim Byeong-wook, and organized with support from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and KAIST.
About 100 participants are expected to attend the forum, including members of the National Assembly, officials from related government ministries, local government heads, city and provincial council members, the president of POSTECH, medical school officials, the POSTECH research-oriented medical school establishment promotion committee, hospital directors from the Pohang area, and heads of grassroots organizations.
Professor Kim Cheol-hong, head of the Medical Science Department at POSTECH, will present on the topic "Establishing a POSTECH Research-Oriented Medical School: POSTECH's New Mission, Bio National Defense," and Lee Min-gu, director of the Yonsei University Physician-Scientist Training Project Group, will present "Domestic Physician-Scientist Training Programs: Current Status and Improvement Directions through the Yonsei Medical School Case."
Following the presentations, the discussion chaired by Kang Dae-hee, chairman of the Seoul Medical School Future Development Committee, will feature panelists including Jang In-jin, co-chairman of the Ministry of Science and ICT Bio Special Committee; Shin Chan-soo, chairman of the Korean Association of Medical Colleges and Medical Schools; Cha Yoo-jin, professor at KAIST Medical Science Research Center; Han Dong-seon, director of Pohang Semyung Christian Hospital; Kang Jeong-ja, director of Talent Development Policy at the Ministry of Education; and Song Yang-su, director of Medical Workforce Policy at the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Pohang City, Gyeongbuk Province, and POSTECH, the event organizers, aim to build consensus across various sectors on a new innovative medical education model prepared to lead South Korea's bio-health industry competitiveness through this forum.
They also plan to review various factors to consider in training physician-scientists and derive the optimal direction to serve as a milestone for establishing the POSTECH research-oriented medical school.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, "Physician-scientists equipped with scientific and technological capabilities in the bio-health industry are each a source of competitiveness comparable to large corporations," adding, "Training physician-scientists through the POSTECH research-oriented medical school will unleash tremendous synergy with the world-class bio R&D infrastructure that Pohang has built over the years."
Pohang City held the "Ministerial Meeting on Training Physician-Scientists" in February at the main conference room of POSTECH, together with the Ministry of Education, Gyeongbuk Province, and POSTECH.
View original imageThe "POSTECH Research-Oriented Medical School" plans to be the world's first engineering-based Illinois medical school curriculum introduced in the form of a medical science graduate school, operating an MD-PhD 8-year combined degree program (2+4+2).
