Restoration of Nuclear Ecosystem Begins in Gyeongnam... Production of Main Equipment for Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4 Starts
Governor Park Wansu: "It Will Be a Catalyst to Revitalize Gyeongnam's Economy"
On the afternoon of the 15th, a groundbreaking ceremony for the main equipment production of Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4 and a nuclear power ecosystem meeting were held at the Doosan Enerbility forging plant in Changwon, Gyeongnam.
According to Gyeongnam Province, the groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Park Wan-su, Governor of Gyeongnam Province; Lee Chang-yang, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy; Hong Nam-pyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City; and National Assembly members Kim Young-sun, Kang Ki-yoon, Choi Hyung-doo, Yoon Han-hong, and Lee Dal-gon.

Hwang Ju-ho, President of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power; Jeong Yeon-in, President of Doosan Enerbility; Choi Ik-soo, President of KEPCO Nuclear Fuel; Kim Seong-am, President of Korea Electric Power Technology; Kim Hong-yeon, President of KEPCO KPS; Noh Chung-shin, Director of Gyeongnam Technopark; and representatives of nuclear power cooperation companies, totaling about 150 people, also attended the event.
At the ceremony, a performance was held where the button of the world's largest 17,000-ton press machine, made by processing large metal materials, was operated to begin the production of the main equipment for Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4.

Governor Park said, “Looking at recent economic indicators such as employment, unemployment, and manufacturing production index, it appears that Gyeongnam has entered an economic recovery phase,” adding, “The commencement of the main equipment production for Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4 will serve as a catalyst to invigorate the Gyeongnam economy.”
He added, “Gyeongnam Province will lay the foundation for a new leap forward by securing nuclear power technology and will strive to play a leading role in restoring the nuclear power ecosystem.”

View original imageThe subsequent nuclear power ecosystem meeting was held under the chairmanship of Minister Lee Chang-yang of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
About 20 people attended, including Ryu Myung-hyun, Director of the Industrial and Trade Bureau of the province; representatives from Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Korea Electric Power Technology, KEPCO KPS, KEPCO Nuclear Fuel, Korea Energy Technology Evaluation Institute, Doosan Enerbility, and 10 nuclear power partner companies.
At the meeting, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced a nuclear technology and manpower roadmap for nuclear research and development and workforce training targeting nuclear power companies. Doosan Enerbility and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power introduced detailed plans for ordering the main and auxiliary equipment for Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4, which will supply large-scale work orders.
The attending nuclear power partner companies expressed their expectations for work supply and financial improvement following the resumption of Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4 and proposed the early commencement of the national defense and nuclear convergence industrial complex in Changwon.

In response, Ryu Myung-hyun, Director of the Industrial and Trade Bureau of the province, said, “The province will work closely with project implementers, the government, and related agencies to expedite related procedures such as preliminary feasibility studies and various impact assessments, aiming to start construction of the national industrial complex by 2026.”
