WSJ "Apple Breaks Its Own Rules with Mixed Reality Headset"
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) diagnosed on the 13th (Korean time) that Apple is breaking its own rules with the mixed reality (MR) headset expected to be unveiled soon.
Apple will unveil an MR headset in the form of ski goggles, which it has been developing for seven years, at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) scheduled as early as the 5th of next month. However, the headset is still in experimental mode, and even if it is unveiled, a source familiar with the supply chain explained that it would likely be released no earlier than the fall.
Regarding this, WSJ pointed out that the temporary unveiling of the MR headset differs from Apple’s usual path of introducing products to the market only after they are fully completed. The price is also expected to reach $3,000 (about 4.01 million KRW). This is three times the price of the Meta Quest Pro model, the latest high-end product released last year by Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, which has been heavily investing in the metaverse.
The media explained that this price is high for many consumers to afford. Additionally, this MR headset does not have an internal battery and requires carrying an external battery, which WSJ added is a significant departure from Apple’s typical design.
