Elderly People Caught Growing Opium Poppies for Drug Use in Their Vegetable Garden
Elderly individuals growing opium poppies for drug use in urban gardens were caught by the police.
On the 10th, the Gwangsan Police Station in Gwangju announced that they had booked Mr. A (in his 60s) and Ms. B (female, in her 80s) without detention on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act.
They are suspected of cultivating opium poppies, which are used as raw materials for drugs, at their residences in Songjeong-dong and Unsu-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City.
The police seized 142 poppy plants from Mr. A and 117 from Ms. B.
They reportedly told the police, "The flower seeds flew over and grew by themselves," and "The flowers grew naturally, and I left them alone because they were pretty."
