Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics Join Efforts to Support Energy Usage Reduction in Naju City
Participation in Naju City Resident Demand Response (DR) Service Project
Supported via Samsung Electronics SmartThings and LG Electronics ThinQ
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are participating in the Naju City energy self-sufficiency city construction project. They will support the SmartThings and ThinQ services respectively to help Naju citizens reduce their energy consumption.
On the 10th, the two companies announced that they will participate in a pilot project for the 'Resident Demand Response (DR) Service,' which distributes energy-saving solutions in collaboration with Naju City and Korea Electric Power Corporation.
On the 31st, when Samsung Electronics announced its consolidated Q4 results with sales of 70.4646 trillion KRW and operating profit of 4.3061 trillion KRW, the Samsung Seocho Building in Seocho-gu, Seoul was seen. Samsung Electronics' annual performance recorded sales of 302.2314 trillion KRW and operating profit of 43.3766 trillion KRW. Compared to the previous year, sales increased by 8.09%, but operating profit decreased by 15.99%. Photo by Kim Hyun-min kimhyun81@

It is a system where the Power Exchange or local governments recommend reducing electricity usage through DR issuance during peak electricity usage times, and individual households receive incentives if they comply. Naju City will introduce the resident DR service by selecting about 2,000 apartment households within the innovation city as part of the 'Energy Valley Microgrid (MG)' project to build an energy self-sufficient city.
As a project partner, Samsung Electronics provides a solution that allows individual households to easily manage their energy consumption through 'SmartThings Energy.' SmartThings Energy is an energy-related service offered on the 'SmartThings' app, Samsung Electronics' integrated home appliance management platform. It supports services such as monitoring appliance energy usage and an AI-powered saving mode that automatically reduces electricity consumption before reaching the progressive rate threshold. It also provides energy inefficiency alerts.
Park Chan-woo, Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Home Appliance Business Division, said, "Following the resident DR project in Seoul in March, we have expanded the scope of business cooperation to Naju City. We will strive to develop various services so that more consumers can easily and conveniently reduce their home energy consumption."
On the 9th, at the Korea Electric Power Corporation headquarters in Naju City, a networking seminar for new energy business to create the Gwangju-Jeonnam Innovation City Energy Valley MG was held. Jeong Seung-il, President of Korea Electric Power Corporation, Yoon Byung-tae, Mayor of Naju City, and Park Tae-hong, Head of the Platform Business Office at LG Electronics Platform Business Center (6th, 7th, and 12th from the left, respectively) are taking a commemorative photo. /
LG Electronics is also conducting the Energy Valley MG project with Naju City following Seoul in March. It provides the 'Auto-DR' service through the LG ThinQ app to some apartment complexes in Bitgaram-dong, Naju City. Auto-DR is an automatic appliance control service linked with regional DR information. When the electricity reduction recommendation period begins, the LG ThinQ server automatically adjusts the air conditioner’s set temperature and changes its operating status to reduce energy consumption.
LG Electronics also offers the 'Our Home Energy Monitoring Service' to the target apartments, which provides information on appliance energy usage, electricity bills, and advance notifications of progressive rate tiers. This service was previously provided to users who pay electricity bills directly to KEPCO without going through management offices of houses, villas, or multi-family residences.
Jung Ki-hyun, Vice President and Head of LG Electronics Platform Business Center, said, "LG Electronics will continue to make efforts to provide differentiated customer experiences in terms of energy savings through various services using the LG ThinQ app."
