"Sleep Well"... Man Who Reads Books, Dongdaemun-gu Mayor Ilpyeong Lee
Children's Day Celebration … Reading Time with Anpyeong Elementary School Children
Significant Support for Educational Expenses to Strengthen Literacy and Writing Skills
On the morning of the 4th, Dongdaemun-gu Mayor Ilhyung Lee visited the library of Seoul Anpyeong Elementary School and spent time reading picture books to children who arrived early at school.
Anpyeong Elementary has been conducting a "Happy Reading Storytime" activity every Friday before class, where parents read books to students who come to school early. In celebration of Children's Day, the Dongdaemun-gu Mayor prepared a special time to read books to the children.
As the children gathered closely, Mayor Lee captivated them with the exciting story of the picture book “Big Trouble”, pointing out the amusing illustrations of animal friends. The children were drawn into the book with sparkling eyes. Afterwards, an “interactive reading activity” was held where the children shared their individual thoughts about the actions of the main character, the raccoon.
The district supports various programs such as reading, discussion, and essay writing that foster critical thinking and humanities knowledge by providing educational expense subsidies to address the issue of "lack of literacy."
Dongdaemun-gu Mayor Ilhyung Lee said, “In this era flooded with vast amounts of information, it is important to develop the ability to select, process, and utilize necessary information. This requires training from an early age to expand thinking through reading various books and to express thoughts coherently.” He added, “We will greatly support reading and writing education so that our children can freely imagine and share their imagination with others.”

The district provides 12,000 KRW per student to all schools in the area for book purchases, offering opportunities to access diverse and new books. In addition, through a space improvement support project to build an inviting “Emotional Library,” efforts are being made to create an environment where students can stay close to books.
