Development of Tourist Attractions Featuring Historical, Cultural, and Ecological Stories of 3 Places Including Goyang Hwajeon Village
Gyeonggi Province is developing three locations?Korea Aerospace University and Hwajeon Village in Goyang, the Cheongchun Station 1979 area in Gapyeong, and the Buyongsan area (Shin Suk-ju's tomb) in Uijeongbu?into tourist attractions that embody stories of history, culture, ecology, and peace.
On the 3rd, Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization announced the results of the "2023 History, Culture, and Ecology Tourism Convergence Content Development Contest," which includes these plans.
This contest is a project aimed at revitalizing historical, cultural, and ecological tourism resources in cities and counties by discovering tourism content based on storytelling.
The two organizations will invest 90 million KRW each in Goyang City, Gapyeong County, and Uijeongbu City to operate tourism content utilizing various local resources.
Looking at the main projects, Goyang City proposed "A Drink of Makgeolli with the Flying Youth in Hwajeon," which connects Korea Aerospace University, Hwajeon Station, Hwajeon-dong Mural Village, and the Drone Anchor Center by a walking trail near Hwajeon Station tourist sites.
Hwajeon Village, designated as a military protection zone and frozen in the 1970s, Hwajeon-dong Mural Village spanning over 4 km of alleys, and Korea Aerospace University, a specialized university in aerospace science, are all connected. The plan also includes diverse elements such as establishing a drone-specialized industrial ecosystem in Goyang City.
Gapyeong County plans "Retro Cheongpyeong, Flying Again," based on the local landmark "Cheongchun Station 1979" area. Starting with the 1971 "Cheongpyeong Festival," also called the "Korean Woodstock Festival," and the first Riverside Song Festival held in 1979, the project aims to restore and revitalize Cheongpyeong’s cultural and artistic history as the birthplace of youth culture through storytelling resources, presenting a sustainable, resident-led tourism content representing the region.
Uijeongbu City will operate a wellness forest experience program under the theme "The Path to Meet Nature and Myself, Uijeongbu Buyong-gil" in the Buyongsan area. The path, inspired by the poem "Return to Heaven" (귀천) by Uijeongbu’s representative poet Cheon Sang-byeong, includes historical figures and cultural assets such as the tomb of Shin Suk-ju. The Buyong-gil trail and the Buyongsan area will offer visitors engaging storytelling historical explanations by cultural tourism guides and traditional cultural and artistic performances.
