Yeongdo-gu School Route Tragedy... Busan Police Agency Announces Safety Activity Guidelines
The Busan Metropolitan Police Agency announced guidelines regarding the death of an elementary school girl that occurred in Yeongdo on April 28.
On the 2nd, the Busan Police Agency stated that to prevent such incidents in the future, they will concentrate police forces on traffic safety vulnerable areas and times, and strengthen publicity to ensure safety.
The police will intensify crackdowns on violations of school zone traffic laws such as running red lights and speeding, and will apply regulations on illegal parking and stopping in child protection zones even during nighttime hours.
Additionally, in cooperation with district offices, illegal parking and stopping vehicles will be monitored before school start and end times, and the police will conduct year-round unmanned enforcement in school zones using camcorder equipment.
They will also strengthen business agreements with the Busan Office of Education to prevent safety accidents, improve facilities to secure safe school routes, and provide safety rule education for teachers, parents, and students during school commute times.
Furthermore, they plan to select school zones with high risk of traffic accidents, such as areas around construction sites and places with frequent large vehicle traffic.
On the 28th, an accident occurred on the way to school at an elementary school in Yeongdo-gu, Busan, where a 1.5-ton cylindrical fiber roll rolled down a slope and struck people, resulting in 4 casualties.
The large spool, which gained speed on the slope, knocked down about 10 meters of safety fencing and hit pedestrians, killing one third-grade elementary school girl and injuring another girl, a boy, and a woman in her 30s.
The spool had fallen from a forklift during loading and unloading operations at a factory located above, rolling down about 100 meters.
