A survey revealed that when couples divorce, many men experience mixed feelings of love and hate, while a significant number of women feel a sense of liberation.
On the 1st, the remarriage-specialized matchmaking company ‘OnlyU’ released the results of a survey conducted together with the matchmaking company Bienarae. The survey targeted 514 single men and women (257 men and 257 women respectively) who hope to remarry (in their later years) after divorce, conducted from the 24th to the 29th of last month.
According to the survey, regarding the emotions felt when ending a marriage and proceeding with a divorce, 29.2% of men answered that they experienced ‘mixed feelings of love and hate,’ which was the highest response. In contrast, 33.1% of women said they felt ‘a sense of liberation,’ which was the most common answer among women.
Other responses from men were ‘a new start’ (25.3%), ‘justice served’ (24.1%), and ‘regret’ (15.2%), while women’s responses followed with ‘justice served’ (23.4%), ‘mixed feelings of love and hate’ (19.3%), and ‘a new start’ (16.0%).
Son Dong-gyu, CEO of OnlyU, explained, “Men, who often cause the reasons for divorce such as infidelity or financial ruin, experience a flood of mixed emotions regarding divorce.” He added, “Women who have suffered unfair treatment and lived under oppression by their spouses experience the pleasure of breaking free from restraint and suppression.”
When asked about family reactions to mentioning divorce, the most common response among men was ‘respect for their opinion’ (38.1%), while among women it was ‘willing acceptance’ (37.0%).
Regarding the timing of informing parents or siblings about their divorce, the most common response among men was ‘when seriously considering divorce’ (42.0%), followed by ‘after filing for divorce’ (37.0%), ‘after the divorce process is completed’ (14.0%), and ‘when the paternal family first suggested divorce’ (7.0%).
