Ten High School Students Who Assaulted Freshmen Sent to Prosecution Without Detention
Ten 2nd and 3rd-year high school students who collectively assaulted a freshman have been sent to prosecution without detention.
On the 31st, the Sancheong Police Station in Gyeongnam announced that they referred these students to the prosecution with a non-detention indictment opinion on charges including special assault.
According to the police, the students are accused of beating freshman student A with fists and blunt objects in a dormitory of a high school in Sancheong around 11 p.m. on the 13th, allegedly because “his tone was arrogant.”
They verbally pressured him for about 30 minutes and then assaulted him for 60 minutes, threatening retaliation if he reported the incident and warning him not to take off his clothes even when he went home.
Student A sustained injuries to his chest and abdomen from the hour-long assault and was diagnosed with a three-week recovery period.
The provincial Office of Education previously conducted a comprehensive survey on school violence targeting all students at the school.
The investigation revealed that three current students had been victims of school violence by seniors, and six students reported hearing about seniors committing school violence.
The Office of Education plans to conduct a special audit at the school to uncover how the school failed to recognize the violence and to check for any attempts to downplay or conceal the incidents.
