Police Launch Special Crackdown on Voice Phishing Involving 'Daepopon and Malicious App Distribution'
Crackdown on Malicious App Production and Distribution
The National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters announced on the 30th that it will conduct a special crackdown from the 1st of next month until June on the means used in crimes involving telecommunications financial fraud (voice phishing).
The targets of this special crackdown include various money laundering activities such as ghost accounts, ghost phones, phone number manipulation repeaters, and illegal currency exchange; the creation and distribution of malicious apps; and the sending of various bait messages and automated response system calls.
The National Police Agency decided to expand the scope of the crackdown because recently, laundering through illegal currency exchange often involves virtual assets, physical goods, and securities such as gift certificates.
The National Police Agency stated, "We will also expand investigations to the main perpetrators who are members of overseas criminal organizations using these criminal means, and actively recover profits to the national treasury through seizure and confiscation before prosecution."
