More Than Half Responded That the Ideal Number of Children Is One
A survey revealed that residents of Shanghai, China, do not have children because they are satisfied with their current situation.
According to local media on the 28th, the Shanghai Statistics Bureau conducted a survey of local residents and found that 41.8% answered that the reason for not wanting to have children was "because they are satisfied with the current situation." This was followed by "high cost of support and economic burden (28.5%)" and "age and physical reasons (13%)."
When asked about the ideal number of children, 58.1% responded with one child, the highest proportion. This was followed by two children (36.7%). Only 2.6% answered three children.

Among local residents with Shanghai hukou (household registration), 70.8% had one child, 25.1% had two children, and 1.2% had three or more children. This indicates that the intention to have children is lower among Shanghai locals. The average age of first childbirth in Shanghai was 30.36 years, and the average childbirth age was 31.18 years.
