Incheon City Seeks Ways to Preserve and Utilize Modern Cultural Heritage
Incheon City has embarked on a systematic plan to preserve and utilize modern cultural heritage within the region.
On the 29th, the city announced that it will launch a project to establish an 'Incheon-style Modern Cultural Heritage Preservation and Utilization Plan' and is calling for contractors.
This project includes establishing a system for Incheon-style modern cultural heritage, developing tourism resource strategies and support plans for Jemulpo Renaissance, formulating project implementation plans linked to major policies of the Cultural Heritage Administration, and drafting ordinances. The project period will span seven months, from May to November.
Since modern cultural heritage does not fall under cultural properties, there are no higher-level laws requiring preservation, leading to ongoing demands for preservation and utilization measures. In particular, Incheon urgently needs management plans as it possesses many modern cultural heritage sites such as the open port area.
Based on the project results, the city plans to establish a comprehensive management plan for Incheon-style modern cultural heritage, enact ordinances, select (candidate) modern cultural heritage sites, and actively promote the management and utilization of modern cultural heritage.
Notably, the city intends to protect modern cultural heritage efficiently without infringing on citizens' property rights, differing from the existing cultural property management methods.
Furthermore, the value lies not only in architectural and historical significance but also in investigating and documenting memories such as poems, essays, music, films, long-established shops, and places enjoyed and cherished by citizens, leaving them for future generations.
